Learning is in two forms: memorizing to acquire knowledge, and analysis to use that knowledge to arrive at an opinion about something. Our educational system is good at the former but terrible at the latter. There is simply too much political correctness to allow genuine critical thinking. Instead our society is awash with sentimentalism, and facile assumptions that are never challenged. If we really wanted to teach critical thinking, we would have students we exposed to all kinds of ideas and then have them think about and debate them in an open way without the usual censorship. This process would really cause students to learn to examine the world around them and look at it realistically instead of how we want or hope it to be. It will never be, but one can hope and dream.
