Eurovision 2011

Last nite we saw the Eurovision 2011 contest.  I have to admit that my first Eurovision was 2 years ago when Russia hosted it and I became spoiled by the quality of that year.  Since then Eurovision has fallen back to its usual mediocrity and last nite was no exception.  Not a single song was truly memorable.  The best were merely listenable and maybe a bit catchy.  The voting also was completely haphazard with little correlation between talent and scores, and countries overwhelmingly tended to vote for their neighbors and friends.   The background graphics at times overpowered the performers with intense colors and images.  The two worst were Greece and Georgia, which were so bad as to be painful to watch.  Among the best were Spain, Switzerland, Germany (interesting visuals), Iceland, and possibly France which produced a sui generus Opera song.  Lately France has been producing serious (non pop)  songs as if they don´t care if they win or not.  Azerbaijan was also in the better category and it won, which made me happy since all the other runner ups were worse.  So, we will have to see how Azerbaijan does hosting Eurovision next year.
