ACTA is worse than SOPA, here’s what you need to know

(NaturalNews) As a warrior for Internet freedom, you helped defeat the Stop Online Piracy Act, or SOPA by supporting Web black outs by sites like Wikipedia and by contacting your lawmaker to voice your displeasure. So loud was your voice that even the president of the United States sided with you in opposing it.

But don’t take a deep sigh of relief because, after all, we’re talking about a merger of Washington, D.C., and Hollywood here, as well as global interests. After the motion picture industry, its subsidiaries and all “interested parties” have spent nearly $150 million lobbying for some sort of Internet-centric “anti-piracy” bill, you should have known the powers that be would return.

And they have, only this time they are pushing something far more onerous: ACTA, or the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement.

“Although the proposed treaty’s title might suggest that the agreement deals only with counterfeit physical goods (such as medicines) what little information has been made available publicly by negotiating governments about the content of the treaty makes it clear that it will have a far broader scope and in particular will deal with new tools targeting ‘Internet distribution and information technology’”, says an assessment of ACTA by the watchdogs at the Electronic Freedom Foundation.

“ACTA has several features that raise significant potential concerns for consumers’ privacy and civil liberties for innovation and the free flow of information on the Internet [regarding] legitimate commerce and for developing countries’ ability to choose policy options that best suit their domestic priorities and level of economic development,” says EFF’s assessment.

As is usually the case with dubious, rights-stripping legislation, ACTA – which Forbes.com reports was signed by the U.S. in 2011 and has already been sanctioned as well by Japan, Switzerland and many European Union nations – has largely been negotiated in the shadows and, thus, has largely been devoid of scrutiny… until now.

While the Obama administration was shying away from SOPA, it has been aggressively pursuing ACTA (full disclosure: the process was started under the Bush administration). Critics say it is much more far-reaching than SOPA, bypassing “the sovereign laws of participating nations” and “forcing ISP’s across the globe to act as internet police,” Forbes said.

But ACTA isn’t limited just to the Internet. In fact, the agreement would crack down things like generic drugs and would make food patents more difficult to obtain “by enforcing a global standard on seed patents that threatens local farmers and food independence across the developed world,” Forbes says.

The good thing is, there is not universal acceptance of ACTA and its onerous, liberty-stealing provisions. Emerging nations like Brazil and India are adamantly opposed to it for rightfully fearing its provisions would harm their economies.

But Internet freedom is also under attack from other quarters as well. The EFF also notes that the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement, which is a separate measure, would “rewrite the global rules on IP enforcement”.

“All signatory countries will be required to conform their domestic laws and policies to the provisions of the Agreement,” said the EFF assessment. “In the U.S. this is likely to further entrench controversial aspects of U.S. copyright law. The recently leaked U.S. IP chapter also includes provisions that appear to go beyond current U.S. law. This raises significant concerns for citizens’ due process, privacy and freedom of expression rights.”

SOPA may be history but that doesn’t mean Internet freedom does not remain under assault. Tyrants never stop trying to enforce tyranny.

I am not a true Libertarian, but I have a lot of sympathy for them because they are the only ones warning us about an out of control deficit, as well as endless growth in government waste and abuse.  I also like the message of personal responsiblity generally.  I am actually not against government per se, but simply because government tends to become an endless source of waste and abuse, and that is not good for society.

I think that we should all congratulate ourselves for having SOPA and PIPA shut down.  It has been thru our activism that we have been able to say “NO”!  Still, we must continue to be vigilant and active because the dark side will work tirelessly to censor the internet.  It is time for some real democracy in action.

Until now Politicians have been able to get away with the little game of betraying their nation and its people, while the people dutifully reward their betrayal with won elections.  Congress has a 13% approval rate, and a 95% reelection rate.  We need to start exercising our power in the  ballot box if we want things to change.  Once the American people actually start to hold their leaders accountable, they will have to change or lose office, and staying in office is their 1 goal, which means they will have to start working for their constituents instead of against them.

The same is true with companies that also think that they can actively work against the interests of their clients (SOPA and PIPA) while continuing to enjoy their clients patronage.  Enough is enough.  Every time we take out our wallet we are voting with our dollars, and companies are terrified of losing customers.  It is time to put the fear of God in them and send a clear message that we will no longer patronize companies that work against us.  Stop buying products from Sony, for instance, stop going to the movies, and turn off the boob tube.  Hit them where it really hurts.

Give Back Hollywood’s Dirty Money

Motion Picture Association of America President Chris Dodd just threatened to cut off Hollywood campaign contributions to any member of Congress who doesn’t pass his Internet-censorship legislation.

After Congress shelved the controversial PIPA and SOPA bills, Dodd told Fox News: “Those who count on quote ‘Hollywood’ for support need to understand that this industry is watching very carefully who’s going to stand up for them when their job is at stake. Don’t ask me to write a check for you when you think your job is at risk and then don’t pay any attention to me when my job is at stake.”

This is what corruption looks like in Washington. It’s outrageous that Dodd — himself a former senator — is leveling these threats. Our elected officials must send a signal back to Dodd and the rest of K Street that our nation’s laws can’t be bought.

It’s time that Congress showed that its votes are no longer for sale. Congress must give back the MPAA’s dirty money or give it to charity. Congress must make it clear to the world that it won’t be bullied into supporting censorship.

Ron Paul warns police state in America “growing out of control” after U.S. Senator Rand Paul unconstitutionally detained by TSA

(NaturalNews) U.S. Senator Rand Paul was detained by the TSA earlier today after refusing to consent to an illegal, unconstitutional “enhanced pat down.” Such pat-downs are a total violation of the Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Bill of Rights, and they even constitute felony crimes against private citizens as they involve TSA agents thrusting their fingers inside the anus or vagina of air travelers.

At 10 a.m. Monday, Sen. Rand Paul’s staff tweeted that the Senator was “currently being detained by the TSA in Nashville.” Ron Paul tweeted in a follow-up post that “My son Rand is currently being detained by the TSA at the Nashville Airport… for refusing full body pat-down after anomaly in body scanner.” (http://twitter.com/#!/RonPaul/status/161468829996826625)

The Daily Caller reports that Rand Paul’s first scan produced an “anomaly” that prompted the TSA to demand Ran Paul consent to a full-body pat-down (http://dailycaller.com/2012/01/23/report-tsa-detains-sen-rand-paul-in-nas…). He refused, causing the TSA to detain him by refusing to allow him to proceed to his gate. In a strict legal sense, this is also known as “kidnapping.”

TSA lies about the incident

The TSA, of course, is so morally corrupt and wholly incapable of telling the truth that they lied about the incident, claiming Sen. Rand Paul was never “detained” at any point. He was merely “denied” the ability to proceed to his gate.

This is the kind of deceptive, contorted mind game the TSA continues to play with the American people. Remember when the TSA strip-searched a couple of elderly ladies behind closed curtains? White House sides with TSA (and tyranny)

The White House responded today with what can only be called a declaration of a total police state dictatorship in America. At least 7,000 websites black out their homepages in protest of SOPA and PIPA internet censorship bills

(NaturalNews) On January 18, 2012, thousands of websites from around the world came out in protest of two pieces of legislation that threaten to censor the internet as we know it. Google, WordPress, Wired.com, Wikipedia, Tumblr, The Daily Paul, reddit, NaturalNews, and thousands of other websites censored portions or all of their homepages and content in protest of the Stop Online Piracy Act (HR 3261), and the Protect IP Act (S 968), which would essentially give large media conglomerates and the federal government unbridled power to censor the internet.

The website SopaStrike.com says the protest is the “largest online protest in history,” and its creators are urging everyone who encounters a censored page to contact their Congressmen and oppose both SOPA and PIPA. The page also contains a full list of confirmed participants in the blackout, as well as an “unfiltered list” of all additional sites that said they planned to participate:

Wired.com, for instance, participated in the protest by censoring most of the headlines from its landing page with black boxes, while Google did the same thing over its own logo — both of the websites were still functional, however. The Daily Paul went even further by literally censoring all the content on its page, and redirecting all links to the SopaStrike.com page where defenders of freedom are encouraged to take action.

Over at reddit, which normally contains all sorts of user-submitted content, visitors were greeted with a “REDDIT IS DOWN,” message, as well as live updates about the status of both SOPA and PIPA. WordPress also took aggressive action against the two censorship bills by blocking all user content from its homepage.

Why SOPA and PIPA threaten legitimate web content with censorship

Last summer, NaturalNews warned that the Preventing Real Online Threats to Economic Creativity and Theft of Intellectual Property bill was basically a Trojan Horse that would allow the US government to bypass normal legal procedures in targeting websites that may contain, or link to, pirated content (http://www.naturalnews.com/033130_Protect_IP_Act_websites.html). But as we have said numerous times before, the broad scope of the language in the bills threatens many legitimate websites with arbitrary takeover or shutdown by the US Justice Department, with powerful groups like the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), and others prompting and guiding this enforcement action behind the scenes.

Protest leads to temporary ‘shelving’ of SOPA, PIPA still to be voted on January 24

The outcry against SOPA and PIPA has been so loud and effective that, according to House majority leader Eric Cantor, SOPA will now be shelved, and no vote will take place “unless there is consensus on the bill.” This decision represents a huge victory in the short term — but a potential vote on the bill could still rear its ugly head at any time, and most likely at a time when nobody is looking (http://www.slashgear.com/sopa-shelved-after-obama-announcement-16209449/).
